Cruise Route: River Saone, and the Canal du Centre

Sunday afternoon: You will be met at the TGV train station of Le Creusot and transferred to your charming barge home, moored in Fragnes, a little village bordering the Canal du Centre. A champagne welcome will be followed by your first evening meal on the barge.

The village of Nolay

Monday: This morning we go to Chalon sur Saone. Chalon is the birthplace of photography. In 1822 Nicephone Niepce managed to capture an image on glass; you can visit the photographic museum commemorating this event. There will be time to browse in the picturesque shopping area for regional products (Dijon mustard, wine acutrements, and unique kitchen products) or to relax in a café on the town square. Lunch will be served on the barge and the afternoon cruise will bring us to Chagny. For the actives, a great cruise to follow the barge by bike or walking, the barge goes slow and there are 11 locks spaced closely together to pass! Dinner rounds out a great day.

Tuesday: In the morning we continue our cruise to Santenay. After lunch we go for a tour of the Burgundy wine country, followed by a wine tasting in the Chateau of Meursault. The chateau has been tastefully restored and today is one of the biggest and most beautiful estates in Burgundy. We then return to the barge where dinner awaits us.

Wednesday: We cannot leave Santenay without visiting the little town. It is famous for its 380 hectares of vineyards and the castle of Philip the Bold. After your visit of the village, we would love to bring you to the 'montagne les trois croix', an ancient place of celtic worship. The panoramic view of the region from this mont de Sene is breath taking. After lunch we will cruise to Saint Leger sur Dheune. The cruise route allows you again to spend your afternoon on the bike. In Saint Leger you could visit the shops and the jam factory “Au Péché Sucré”. Dinner will be served on the barge.

Thursday: We start our day with a tour in the minivan to the medieval château, La Rochepot - entered through a drawbridge. Then it’s a stop at the ancient market place in Nolay to have a drink on the town square, or to browse in the antique shops. After lunch on the barge we depart in the direction of Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy. The 15th century Hospice (hospital) is one of the most fascinating sites in Burgundy, a high point of this trip. Just opposite you can go for a wine tasting in the 'marché aux vins'. In this town it is good shopping for items related to wine and food. We return to the barge for dinner.

Friday: We start our morning cruise to Ecuisses. Here we moor just opposite of the 'musee du canal', a former canal barge, put on land and used as a museum. You go down into the barge lower hold and visit an exhibition devoted to the life of barge operators and their boats. The 18th century lockhouse hosts a permanent exhition on the history of locks which was instrumental in the industrial development of the area. After lunch we pass the Ecuisses locks, each on 500 meters distance, a last canal stretch and we moor at Montchanin, the final destination of this cruise. Our last on board dinner rounds out a wonderful day.

Saturday: You'll say "Au Revoir" and depart after breakfast for transfer to Le Creusot TGV Station. You may also be transferred to the rental car office, or hotel of your choice.

Our sightseeing schedule is flexible and can be customized to reflect your interests. Occasionally an itinerary will be changed due to canal closures or inclement weather. The Captain will substitute an equally interesting route. Change in itinerary will not be accepted as a cause for cancelling your cruise.
